All in 2s (AI2) - The MVP

I’m not going to lie, All in Twos are my favorite. If this post sounds like it was written by a cheerleader for the AI2 team, that’s because it was.

Here’s how they work: There’s an outer shell, much like with prefolds and covers, however these shells are frequently not wipeable or reusable between washes. Wipeable AI2 shells are absolutely a thing, but you may have to commission them from a WAHM diaper seller. An absorbent soaker snaps into the back of the shell, and depending on the style you can either lay a preemie booster under the soaker to use as a booster, or snap a booster into the front and/or back. You can unsnap the absorbent layers right when you take the diaper off your baby as you’re dropping it in the wet bag, or you can unsnap the soaker and booster after your prewash. I do not recommend going through two day old, soiled diapers to unsnap before the prewash. Seriously, either do it right away or wait until they’re a little cleaner.

My favorite things about AI2s are how easy it is to customize absorbency and how easy they are for everybody. It’s so easy to swap out inserts if you find that your baby is a super heavy wetter, and adding boosters is a breeze. They’re also absolutely foolproof. You know I’m not a fan of infantilizing dads, but I also know that a lot of dads and other caregivers are resistant to using cloth diapers because they seem so much more difficult than disposable diapers (feel free to direct them to this post). AI2s are definitely an easier way to get reluctant caregivers onboard.

Another huge benefit is the fact that you can use trifolded prefolds as soakers! If you started out with prefolds and covers and then had to stock up on AI2s for daycare or reluctant childminders, you don’t need to worry about having wasted money on prefolds that will gather dust in a closet somewhere.
