Not So Montessori: A Series on being Imperfect

Not So Montessori: A Series on being Imperfect

My favorite thing about being Montessori inspired is the flexibility that allows. While we avoid flashy, noisy battery operated toys, any kind of mobile devices, and steer clear of shows and films that are particularly hyperactive, I don’t feel compelled to have my Little Guy live a completely screen free life, avoid fantasy, or shy away from unrealistically illustrated books.

While I work on creating quality content this fall and winter, I’m going to be doing a series of blog posts on things that we do that aren’t Montessori aligned, and may even make some Montessorians clutch their pearls. My hope in doing this is to normalize following the Montessori philosophy without feeling ashamed that it’s not being perfectly implemented. It breaks my heart when I see fellow parents in the Montessori groups fret over whether a certain toy or book is really Montessori aligned, or publicly shame themselves for not adhering strictly enough to guidelines that are about a century old.

I promise, your child is not going to be permanently harmed because they played with plastic stacking rings instead of wooden ones.

I promise your child will be able to identify a cow in real life even if one of their books has a pretty cartoonish illustration of a cow.

I promise your child isn’t going to grow up thinking that sheep drive Jeeps just because you read them Sheep in a Jeep during a farm unit.

Your child is going to benefit so much from the Montessori philosophy, even if your Instagram feed looks completely different from the life you live.

You’ve got this.
